The Slip Redondo Beach King Harbor Bar Review

A Local’s Friendly Pub In King Harbor Marina

The friendly staff of The Slip is ready to serve locals and new friends in King Harbor Marina.

For South Bay locals, walking into The Slip – a new drinking spot on the Redondo Beach Pier – is not like walking into a bar.

It’s like walking into a friend’s house.

We know the owners, we know the place and, if Denise Irwin stays behind the bar – “well see,” she says with her typical friendly but somewhat elusive wink – then we know the staff.

The Slip is a bar and restaurant just down from Naja’s, one of two new places open on this part of the Redondo Beach Pier as summer starts to peek out from the June gloom clouds. (The other is the King Harbor Brewing tasting room.)

It’s in the location where Kegs used to be and is a welcome addition to an area that is in need of some afternoon diversions. After all, one can live only so long at Naja’s as a beer stop during a Saturday or Sunday bike ride.

The menu at The Slip contains some good basics and a few surprises.

Locals feel comfortable slipping into The Slip for beer, wine, cocktails and conversations.

And you certainly can’t always go to Old Tony’s; as great as the sunsets and Fire Chiefs are, you need something else to inspire you to go to ‘Dondo.

The Slip has its mooring spot along the walkway and is a good place to slip into for beers, wines and cocktails. And food.

On tap are craft beers along with some quality “regulars” you can find at several other bars – PubClub.com spent opening day enjoying the Goose Island IPA – and the menu is simple but with quality food. There are burgers, an Italian meatball sandwich, pizza, and salads.

Plus some unique items such as lavender almonds.

Now the latter is not something one might normally associate with what is really a beer-first bar but it shows the creativity of the owners. They know such a thing is something that will appeal to girls and if girls show up then, well, it’s like ringing the singles’ dinner bell to all the guys in the South Bay.

We’ve not tasted the food yet but a friend was eating a burger while we were there on opening day and he quit talking while eating it – a rare moment for him – so we take it that it’s a pretty good burger.

PubClub’s only “gee, I wish they had done that” thought is with the name. We feel they should have named it the Boat Slip. Or perhaps even the The Dock Slip. Telling people you’re going to “the Slip” doesn’t have quite the cachet as saying you’re going to “the boat slip” or “the dock.”

Still, we’re sure that locals and visitors will be slipping into this place quite often this summer.
