Cowboy Boots Have Become Part Of The SEC College Football Game-Day Look

Cowboy boots aren’t just for Texas college football games. I’ve seen them all over the SEC game-day scene, from Alabama and Tennessee to Ole Miss fans visiting Tuscaloosa, worn with dresses, skirts and shorts at fraternity parties, tailgates and inside the stadium. So why have cowboy boots become such a big part of the Southern college football look?

If you think the weather is hot in the South well, there’s something even hotter on college campuses this fall.
A fashion trend is happing at college campuses throughout the south on Saturdays. Girls are wearing cowboy boots to the college football games.
They are wearing them to the fraternity parties, to the tailgate parties and into the stadium.
They are wearing them with dresses, with shorts – including the “Daisy Duke” shorts – and skirts, from Tuscaloosa to Tennessee and at schools throughout the South.
You would expect this in Texas, of course. With the Longhorns, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Houston. But not necessarily in the Deep South.
And frankly, it’s a good look. A great look, in fact.

What is about girls in cowboy boots – and cowboy hats – that makes them look so fine? So alluring, so sexy? Well I can’t say exactly and it doesn’t matter because they do look fine, alluring and sexy. So the affect is, well, effective.
At an Alabama game, I noticed cowboy boots seemingly everywhere. There were even a few Ole Miss girls who came to Tuscaloosa—hey, it’s a social affair!—and every one of them was wearing cowboy boots. I saw plenty of them at Tennessee, too, although Tennessee girls tend to dress more casually than the ones at Bama and Ole Miss.
Cowboy Boots, Shakers & Getting Through Stadium Security

Stuffed inside the boots are shakers, which they use during the game to cheer on the team. But there’s another use I discovered—and one stadium security has discovered, as well. Sometimes they put booze in their boots. Walking into Bryant-Denny Stadium last season, I noticed security checking girls’ boots at the student entrance. One girl I passed had to remove hers, although she had a great attitude about it and was laughing at the situation. Funny thing is that I took that photo at random yet a couple of girls I had met earlier and who joined me later looked at the picture and said, “She’s our sorority sister!” They laughed, too, and sent it to her.
The vast majority of the women wearing boots were college students, recent grads or fairly recent grads. In other words, girls in their 20s. But there were some alumni in their 30s and 40s who sported them, too.
I asked a few if the boots were hot and uncomfortable and they all said in that beautiful drawl of Southern women, “why, no!”
If this is just a trend or something that’s got real – ahem, legs, so to speak – I can’t say. But I can tell you that PubClub.com will continue to have our boots on the ground to investigate.
