You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.
Those lyrics from “Closing Time” by the band Semisonic is basically what governors in Illinois and Ohio have told residents as they have closed all bars and restaurants to customers through the end of March.
It is a move that is taking place across the USA. In California Gov. Gavin Newsom has asked – but not ordered – the same in the Golden State tho some cities are considering or have made it mandatory, including San Francisco.
These Illinois and Ohio announcements came on Sunday, March 15. Two days before St. Patrick’s Day. Already, Chicago canceled its traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade and now its Irish bars will be dark on March 17.
In Washington, D.C., bars and restaurants are not be allowed to provide bar seating, serve standing customers or serve more than six customers at a single table. No more than 250 people will be permitted to gather in a single space, and all nightclubs in the District have been ordered to cease operations immediately.
“I’m aware that this will impact many, many good workers. I can’t tell you how sorry I am, but we will work to mitigate the suffering. It is our goal for everyone to get through this,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.
Bars and restaurants in all areas are able to provide take-out food with curbside pickup, and this is giving a big boost to food delivery services such as GrubHub and UberEats.
