The Ironman, House Parties On the Strand & Single Partying People
When it comes to a location to have a party, the beach is a good place to start. But it also takes the right mix of people, culture and tradition. And Hermosa Beach, CA, one of the South Bay Beach Cities of Los Angeles, has all these proper elements to make it #1 Party Spot for the Fourth of July in the U.S.A.
Hermosa Beach has beach volleyball tournaments, a couple dozen house parties each day (many of them facing the ocean) and The Strand.
The latter is a concrete path that runs parallel to the beach and is full of people walking, riding bikes and rollerblading, either checking out the scene or, if they know the hosts, going from house party to house party.
At one time, there was even margarita wrestling on the sand. (That was pretty wild!)
And with 4th falling on a Monday in 2011, the scene will be full of patriotic spirit the entire weekend. The rockets’ red glare will begin on Saturday, carry over to Sunday and will be reaching their peak on Monday.
The 4th begins with something called The Ironman, which is a test of endurance o another kind. It involves paddling a mile in the ocean, running a mile along the short and – get this – downing a six-pack of beer. It’s all timed, and there are even judges to make sure all the beer is consumed. Then there’s a punk band and the participants run around carrying an American flag in a mosh pit. It’s the kind of silly, harmless fun that marks everyday life in the South Bay.
There’s a good atmosphere, a good party vibe and a good time, and it’s bigger than many other fun party place like, say, Lake Travis.
To be sure, the city officials and especially the police are quite aware of this little beach community’s strong penchant for partying. And they are quick to react to anyone who’s out to do more than simply have a good time.
The cops are on the Strand and they are quick to put an end to any bad behavior by individuals or groups. Anyone causing trouble will be quickly relocated from the beach, Strand or a party to the back of a squad car.
The key to having a perfect time in Hermosa Beach on the 4th is to have fun but don’t be an idiot. If you do something stupid, do it to yourself; don’t involve others in it. And make sure it’s in private, not in public, and certainly not on the Strand or at someone’s house party.
And keep in mind, it’s illegal to drink alcohol on the Strand and the beach, so that’s something the police are also looking to enforce.
