What To Wear When Going Out In This Laid-Back California Beach Town

Flip flops & shorts.
Maybe jeans and a sweatshirt on a chilly night.
That’s about all you need to know about the dress code for going out to the bars in Hermosa Beach, CA.
Yes, this is truly a casual Southern California beach community. It’s volleyball players and people riding bicycles along the beachfront path known as The Strand (and, indeed, right up to the bars).
This is true for both guys and girls, although the ladies to dress a lot better than the men in Hermosa. In fact, the girls have long complained about how sloppy the men dress in this town.
Girls often wear stylish – but comfortable – dresses when they go out in Hermosa. But for shoes, they wear flats, not heels. If you see a girl wearing heels in Hermosa, then she’s either just back from a wedding or is a tourist.

The bars are all casual, tho if you’re going to a more refined place like Tower 12 as opposed to, say, Barnacles, then you’ll want to step up your fashion game to match that of the good-looking crowd.
Otherwise keep it casual.
But not too casual, for bars will not let people in wearing wife-beater shirts or baggy shorts.
It’s the beach, and the fashion is reflected in the location of the bars and largely dictated by the people who live here.
An exception to this, of course, is when a group is on a pub crawl. They are usually in some type of costume.
