More important than who wins the Manhattan Beach AVP Open is  can we get into the bars after the final point!?

That’s the attitude of many people who goes to this annual event at the pier of this lively Southern California beach city a few miles south of Los Angeles International Airport.

With grandstands on the sand and on the pier, a tent grilling burgers and an entertainment area that in the past has included a rock climb that splashed people with water and a margarita lime-shaped mechanical bull, it had much the look and feel of the full-on AVP events.

This event, known as the Wimbledon of Beach Volleyball, has full stands on the weekend and that means the downtown Manhattan Beach bars are busy to the point they are overflowing with people creating long wait times for those who took too long to get off the sand.

And being one to go where the the action is, PubClub.com typically leaves the beach before the day’s play is complete (except for Sunday’s finals) and involves Strand House, Ercoles and the iconic Mamhattan Berach bar Shellback Tavern.

The Manhtttan Beach AVP Open is traditionally in mid-July,
