The Wimbledon Of Beach Volleyball Means Busy Bars In This Southern California City

That’s the attitude of many people who goes to this annual event at the pier of this lively Southern California beach city a few miles south of Los Angeles International Airport.

With grandstands on the sand and on the pier, a tent grilling burgers and an entertainment area that included a rock climb that splashed people with water and a margarita lime-shaped mechanical bull, it had much the look and feel of the full-on AVP events.

About the only thing missing were some of the sport’s marquee players, who have been forced to leave California’s beaches for ones in Europe due to the lack of a full tour, and also some locals. While Sunday’s stands were full, Saturday was fairly sedate on the sand, at least by Manhattan Open standards.
However, the downtown bars sure were busy. And being one to go where the the action is, the Bar Blogger left the beach and went to the bars. That involved the new and happening Strand House, and joining the Bud Light Lime girls bouncing around from Shark’s Cove to Ercoles to Shellback Tavern.
The 2020 event is scheduled for Aug. 14-16, wth one in a mile and half down the Strand, the Hermosa Beach Open on July 24-26.
