Manhattan Beach & Two Harbors On Catalina Island Host Top Events

It’s October in Los Angeles, which might as well be called Rocktober.
Because there’s several events that rock this place, and some don’t have anything to do with Halloween.
Here’s a rundown of this weekend’s top events, which include a 10K followed by a beer garden and a pirates and wenches party across the Pacific Ocean on Catalina Island.
• Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair 10K
Get a little exercise before you socialize in the beer garden with the annual 10K run on Saturday. It starts at Valley/Ardmore, goes up and down some hills, goes along The Strand and finishes at the pier. Then so many people go to Shellback Tavern, the entire bar area is lined up in advance with Bloody Marys. It’s a great way to start the weekend!

• Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair Beer Garden

One of the top singles event of the year is here, the annual Hometown Fair beer garden! This is a party, a time and place when just about every single gathers in a fenced-in grass field in Manhattan Beach to, well, drink beer! And socialize.
A few tips: The beer garden opens at noon and usually fills up by 1:30. I’ll send out a couple of Tweets with updates on the line situation, so be sure you’re following @pubclub. It reaches its drinking peak at about 3. Beers are served until 5.
You must buy drink tickets and they stop selling those at 4; be sure and check to see if any leftover tickets are good on Sunday. They usually are, but things can change on a yearly basis.
The weather will be sunny and hot – a high of 80 is predicted. There’s little breeze in the beer garden. Fortunately, a few years ago they put in a big tent for shade. There are Port-O-Lets in the back of the beer garden.
Saturday is by far the biggest day but Sunday afternoons are fun, too. If you need extra incentive to get moving to go back the next day, Graceband is playing on Sunday. That’s the full-on Elvis Presley tribute band.

• Buccaneer Days, Two Harbors, Catalina Island

Pirates and wenches from Los Angeles go swashbuckling on Catalina for the annual Buccaneer Days on Catalina Island. While called “days” it’s actually one main day, on Saturday. A lot of long-timers arrive Thursday or Friday on boats and tie up in the harbor, but the masses from L.A., the Catalina Express ferry brings people in from the mainland. One thing: they now charge $40 a day for this event and it’s changed the culture of it.

• How They Ruined Buccaneer Days On Catalina
Argggg! That’s what it’s like now for many – including PubClub – at Buccaneer Days. In the past, this was always a tough decision between it and the beer garden. No more, unfortunately. Fortunately, this story has lots of support; check the comments, including ones from the organizers.

• Last Smackfest Volleyball Class Starts Saturday
Smackfest Events is taking signups for its last volleyball class of 2017. These classes are a great way to meet people so if you’re new in town, join the party! And it is a party, too, for the class goes to Sharkeez Hermosa after a little Saturday morning exercise. Classes start Oct. 7, are Saturdays from 9:30-11 a.m., and run for six weeks. This is the last class until February.

• Young Frankenstein Musical
Here’s something to get you in the mood for Halloween – Young Frankenstein! There’s a musical of the hilarious Mel Brooks movie – one of my all-time favorites – at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. It’s playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next two weeks. Tickets are as low as $11.

PubClub Travel – Las Vegas Strip Updates
If you’re planning on being in Vegas the next few days or on the weekend, here’s the latest on the situation on the Strip after the tragic shootings. Two people from Manhattan Beach perished and a third was injured, which really brings it home. I have a friend of a friend who stayed at Mandalay Bay who witnessed the whole thing from a room, just three floors below the shooter. He was horrified.

• Weekend California Getaway Destination – The Bay Area
To get back to a positive note, here’s a little-known but really cool place for a weekend getaway in the Bay Area: Pacifica. Right by San Francisco, it has scenic hiking and walking trails, paddleboarding, a craft brewery and a wine bar with live music.
