Manhattan Beach 6-man, Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts, Barley At The Lighthouse, YP 310 Mixer & Shade Rooftop Party

Welcome to the PubClub.com South Bay Party Report!!!
The PubClub.com South Bay Party Report is brought to you by Kona Brewing Company, which goes great with Sunday beach concerts (remember to conceal, conceal!!!). You can now get a 12-pack of Longboard Lager or the Kona variety pack for just $11.99 at Rite Aid!
It’s the first weekend of August, and not too long ago this was the most anticipated weekend of the year. Months of planning and preparation would come to a head for the best beach bash ever held in the South Bay, the Charlie Saikley 6-man.
Beach volleyball was never so much fun (tho Smackfest has done an admirable job of being the “new 6-man”) as thousands of people would pack the sand around the Manhattan Beach Pier wearing team themed costumes in a combination of the creative party mindset with outstanding beach volleyball, making it the quintessential Beach Cities event.
The tournament still exists, and is on a Thursday and Friday this year, but in this special Party Report, PubClub.com takes a look back at the heyday of the 6-man’s prime party time and examines the arguments that led to its near demise.
So put on your Team Magnum moustache, grab a drink (a Kona beer would be good!) and cue up “Sweet Caroline.”
But first, here’s a rundown of what else happening this weekend!
THURSDAY: 310 YP MIXER AT STANDING ROOM

After you’ve had your 6-man fun Thursday afternoon at Shellback, ride your bike down to Standing Room for this monthly mixer. It starts at 6, there is an extended Happy Hour until 7 and acoustic music. Plus, lots of good singles and business socializing opportunities. The event is free.
310 YP is also giving away tickets to the LA Philharmonic show at the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 6. Register on its Facebook page.
And that’s not all! It also has an end-of-summer party with drinks (of course), food and live music. It’s Saturday, Sept. 10 at Big Door Studios in El Segundo. This is a “dress to impress” ticketed event with early-bird tickets $20, rising to $40.

SATURDAY: BARLEY AT THE LIGHTHOUSE

One of our most popular local bands is playing the Lighthouse 4-8 p.m. Catch ‘em in these venues while you can, for Barley might be about to hit the big time. It’s playing KAABOO, the massive music festival at Del Mar in San Diego in September (how big? Jimmy Buffett is also playing!).
SUNDAY: BEACH CONCERTS BEGIN IN HERMOSA!
Who’s playing? Who cares!? It’s like asking what the Drink of the Week is at Mermaid. Doesn’t matter; you know it will be good. So just relax and enjoy it. But, if you must know, here’s the lineup of bands.

SUNDAY: PINE MOUNTAIN LOGS AT POLLIWOG PARK
The Hermosa concert has competition this week from its neighbor to the north as the Pine Mountain Logs are playing at Polliwog Park on Sunday.

SUNDAY: SHADE HOTEL ROOFTOP PARTY
SundayFunday can start with any one of the bottomless mimosa brunches in Hermosa or Redondo, or at the rooftop party at Shade Hotel in Manhattan. This is a mini version of those Vegas pool parties. They have proven to be so popular that another one has been added for Sunday on Labor Day Weekend.

Read it, know it, live it!
This one has to do with post-Sunday concerts.

MANHATTAN BEACH 6-MAN

Rather than go through everything here, I’ve reposted some original stories from the 6-man’s heyday. There’s prose and tons of photos (including Eric W., in his French Maids costume). There’s also a look at the current 6-man; the party now is afternoons in Shellback Tavern.

ROAD TRIP: FIREWORKS SHOW IN VEGAS
If you’re going to be in Vegas this weekend, be sure and go by Caesers Palace, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary all weekend.
Probably the most famous moment in the hotel/casino’s history was when daredevil Evil Knievel attempted to jump the fountains. He failed, leading to a spectacular crash that broke nearly every bone in his body and ended his jumping career.
The highlight this weekend is a fireworks show Friday along The Strip. Here’s a full look at the 50th anniversary celebration.
REDONDO WATERFRONT FINAL HARBOR COMMISSION MEETING
This is it, folks, the final meeting with the Harbor Commission to spiff up the Redondo Beach Pier. It’s open to the public. Monday, Aug 8, 6:30 p.m. Location: Redondo Beach City Council Chambers, 415 Diamond St.
