Top Social Singles Event Leads Into OTL’s Second Weekend

If you think Del Mar Opening Day was crowded the last few years when around 45,000 people packed into the tight race course, then it could be even more popular this year.

That’s because Opening Day in 2016 is not on its traditional Wednesday, but on a Friday. Yes, a Friday.  The date is July 15. This could lead to breaking the all-time attendance record of 47,339 set in 2012.

It most certainly will set a San Diego record for largest number of three-martini (or beer, cocktail, margarita) lunches taken on a single day.

After all, it’s one of the top social events of the year for San Diego’s singles and with it now leading into a weekend, it’s easy to envision a crowd approaching or even topping 50,000.

The track is actually better suited to hold 35,000-40,000, but that’s just one of the things you have to deal with on Opening Day. Patience is the key when getting drinks at the bar, food, betting and going to the restroom.
