This a rundown of things to do, the best places to be and the most fun events for Labor Day Weekend in San Diego. There are pool parties, concerts, a great bar scene and it is also the start of the college football season.
Labor Day Weekend Events
The Beach Boys – the Mike Love version – play Sunday night at the Shell Amphitheater on San Diego Bay. Called Endless Summer Gold it also features John Stamos. The “Fun, Fun, Fun” begins at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices start at $73 and of course there is free open seating/standing on the sidewalk.
Bars & Nightlife
Pacific Beach’s Mavericks Beach Club is having Big Disco Energy Skate Rink. On Sunday, Mavericks’ side parking lot will be transformed into a Roller Disco from Noon-8 p.m. There are Skate rentals, a pop-up bar and drink specials. The rest of the weekend it’s the usual fun party crowd with a DJ at night.
In the Gaslamp Quarter, barleymash is having an end of Summer “barley-bash” on Labor Day Weekend with specialty food and drink offerings Sunday & Monday. Drinks ($16-18) are the Summer Sunset with Old Forester, Pineapple, Mango, Lime, and Grenadine, the Summer Never Ends with Jack Daniels, Lime, Honey, Peach Bitters, and Ginger Beer, or the Hot Summer Night with Herradura Blanco, Cucumber, Jalapeno, Lime, and Tajin. For grub, indulge in Bourbon Peach BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs with Corn Salsa and Sweet Potato Chips, and Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble Bars with Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. DJs start at 9:45 p.m. Also bring your business card for a chance to win a Jack Daniels Yeti Cooler. Giveaways and swag will be available throughout the weekend

Jimmy Buffett Day In San Diego
It was one year ago that Jimmy Buffett passed away and Margaritaville in the Gaslamp is recognizing Jimmy Buffett Day – yes, there is such a thing and it’s Friday, Aug. 30 – throughout Labor Day Weekend with a fundraiser, live music and food & drink specials at the pool bar.
Up the coast, the Buffett tribute band The Jimmy’s Buffet is performing at Great Park Live in Irvine on Friday. The band’s Facebook page has details.
College Football Opening Weekend
One of the (many) cool things about living in San Diego is all the transplants from around the country gather together each Saturday or Sunday in designated bars to watch their alma maters or hometown NFL teams. This weekend there are some big games to start the college football season. They are, with alumni bars in parentheses):
• 9 .m.– Clemson vs. Georgia & Penn State (Knotty Barrel) at West Virginia
• 12:30 – Miami at Florida (Smoking Gun) and Nebraska (Duck Dive) vs. UTEP
• 4 p.m. – Western Kentucky at Alabama (Bootlegger) & Notre Dame (Mavrick’s & Tower 13, and other locations) at Texas A&M
Sunday, Sept 1
• 4:30 p.m. – LSU (Tavern + Bowl) vs. USC (Hideaway, PB)
Monday, Sept. 2
4:30 – Boston College at Florida State (Taproom, PB, on the patio). The enthusiasm for this game, and the rest of the season for that matter for this alumni group, pretty much went pffffft with FSU’s loss to Georgia Tech last weekend. Oh well, the PubClub.com cheer is “Win Or Lose, We Booze!”
Final Weekend For The Del Mar Races
It’s the next-to-final weekend of races at Del Mar race track. Friday drinks are half priced until 5. Gates open at 2 and the horses start running at 4.
Padres Schedule
The San Diego Padres are out of town Labor Day Weekend but return to Petco Park on Monday against Detroit. That is the start of an eight-game home stand.
