The state of Florida has created a state of mind for Parrotheads by declaring Aug. 30 as Jimmy Buffett Day.
The date celebrates the life and music of Jimmy Buffett, whose free-spirited life and significant contributions to national and state culture are commended and celebrated.
This is on the heels of the Sunshine State renaming its scenic road, A1A, the Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.
“Keep the party going” were among the final words Buffett told those who were with him in his final hours on Labor Day Weekend 2023. And that is what Florida is doing by recognizing the man who provided the unofficial soundtrack to the state for decades, going back to his time in Key West in the 1970s. He wrote his most famous song, or at least finished it, sitting in traffic on the Overseas Highway one afternoon. Later, he performed “Margaritaville” for the first time in Key West and when people asked him to play it again he said to himself, “hey they must like that song.”
In creating Jimmy Buffett Day, Florida may have also created a great marketing campaign, for Parrotheads may well “flock” to the state on Aug. 30 to have boat drinks and/or margaritas at bars throughout the Sunshine State. While listening to Buffett tunes, of course.
