When I peered into the glass windows of the 2021 Grand Decant, the Friday night tasting adventure that is one of the top annual events of the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival, one thought came to mind.
“Wow, this is a wine lovers paradise!”
What I saw at Julep Venue, a new location for this event, was rows and rows of tables lined with bottles of wine and wine reps from all over California pouring samples to the people who purchased tickets.
Once inside, I discovered even more. Paso Robles had taken command of a room on the side and tucked away in another room was a VIP area with – you guessed it – even more wines.
Yet things did not stop there. At the back there were tables featuring craft beers, tequila, whiskey. rum sake and kombucha.
It was interesting (and good) to see High West Distillery there; this is a new and hot (as in nearly impossible to get into) distillery in Park City, Utah. The next day at the Grand Tasting they even brought in a railway car to do their sampling!
There was even Soleil mimosas in a bottle – no mixing required!
Frankly, it took a few minutes of wandering around to get a mental handle on everything.
I did manage to do this, however (naturally) and most often found myself hovering around the Paso Robles room (I have been there on a wine tasting trip and the tourism board recently sent me a bottle before they invite me back) and the Mount Gay rum booth. I love rum.
In between I did like everyone else: I went up and down the aisles sampling reds and whites from various wineries as well as the craft beers and spirits, chatting with the reps and others who were at the event. For me, the social aspect of the all the events are a prime factor in this being one of California’s premier wine and food festivals.
