National Rum Day is August 16 – yes, there really is such a thing – and the Gaslamp Quarter restaurant and bar is celebrating it because rum is an essential part of the Cuban lifestyle. Called Havana Nights, this is a free event and it starts at 7 p.m. Rum samples are from Havana 1920’s extensive list of curated selections. You must register in advance here.
Signature cocktails made with rum will be available, including the Cuban Swizzle, a combination of coconut rum, green chartreuse, fresh lime, pineapple, demerara sugar and soda; Havana 1920 Mojito, an elevated mojito crafted with freshly-pressed sugarcane juice, Havana Club aged añejo blanco rum, fresh lime juice, yerba buena, sugarcane syrup and club soda; its signature Havana 1920 Daiquiri, a combination of Havana Club añejo rum, fresh lime juice and fresh sugarcane syrup; and more. Havana 1920’s extensive rum collection spans more than 150 varietals that have been hand-selected by Beverage Director Ryan Andrews, including Diplomático, Neisson L’Esprit, Flor de Caña, Rhum Clément and Foursquare Rum Distillery, among others.
The complete menu will also be available. To view the menu or make a reservation, visit the website at www.havana1920.com.
But that’s not the only August celebration happening at Havana 1920. On Wednesday, Aug. 23, it is recognizing National Cubano Day with a two-for-one deal on the Cubano sandwich. This is the signature sandwich of Cuba and includes pan con bistec, layered with grilled and marinated steak, potato sticks, Swiss cheese, tomato and grilled onions piled on Cuban bread; and ropa vieja, stacked with flavorful Cuban-style shredded beef, Swiss cheese, peppers, onions and tomato sauce on Cuban bread.
Havana 1920 is located at 548 5th Ave., in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.
