Before I even went there, I already knew I would like the Wayfarer Hotel in San Diego’s Pacific Beach.
That is because its website refers to the walking/bike path between it and the sand as the Strand, not the Boardwalk, as it is commonly called in “PB.” In addition to being too Jersey-ish for cool Southern California, there are no boards on the path because it’s made of concrete.
But there is more – much more – to like about the Wayfarer. And it starts with that location, right at the beach (on the Strand, if you will) overlooking the constant activity of people, the beach and the Pacific Ocean. Location, locaation, location. And Pacific Beach is really the quintessential Southern California beach town, with suntanners, surfers and bars.
And then there are the rooms, which are beachy cool. The walls have huge murals of the beach lifestyle, including surfing. Some rooms even have decorative surf boards. They are all well appointed an nice, but not sooo nice that you need to worry about a little sand from your flip flops getting into it. In total, there are 118 rooms and eight suites – some with full or partial ocean views – so this is an intimate hotel, not a high rise. This means there is super-quick access (no long waits for an elevator) to the pool, beach and all the bars and nightlife that is such a big part of the Pacific Beach culture.
And then there is the attitude, which is PB laid back but also with a touch of Vegas hipness. The pool has big sofas and seats, for example. There are also poolside firepits.

The Zepher cafe serves food as well as beers, wines, canned cocktails and slushy drinks such as the Lava Flow.
All this makes it difficult to rise out of those comfy poolside chairs and get out on the Strand, even with Pacific Beach right out the door. But that’s okay because hanging 10 at the Wayfarer is just fine.
