If you want a wake-up call cocktail in San Diego, then head to the tasting room for Your and Yours Distilling Co., at the corner of 15th and G in East Village.
I’m talking an eye-opening, oh-my-I-needed-that stimulating drink that will have you charging head long into the night. The drinks they serve here are made with quality mixers like you would get in any fine bar but with this twist: they also contain excellent coffee or espresso that gives the cocktails a real, well, perk.
I experienced that instant boost from this female-owned distillery with its appropriately-named Up & At ‘Em Coffee Liqueur, made with Y&Y infused gin, fresh orange peels, cinnamon sticks and vanilla bean pods steeped with fresh coffee grounds.
Then I had the Y&Y Espresso Martini (recipe below) and got such a caffeine boost I was ready to get in the starting block of the 100-meter dash in the Olympics. Then again, I don’t drink coffee let alone espresso so I probably was affected by it more than the regular java drinker. But you get the idea.
You & Yours is open at 4 p.m., and I highly recommend it if you’re feel tired after a long day. It’s open until 10 and the setting is like a nice lounge. And it’s doesn’t stop at these drinks. You & Yours also makes bottles (three gins and a vodka for five total with more to come) and several canned cocktails, among them varieties of Vodka Mules, Vodka Sodas and Gin and Tonics for a total of eight.

Three more vodka-based cold brew canned cocktails will soon be added to the You & Yours lineup: Honey Vanilla Cinnamon, Blueberry Lavender, and Citrus (10% ABV; $20, 4 -pack, 355ml).
The spirits and canned cocktails are also available in California at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Vons, Albertsons, upscale bottle shops, gourmet grocery and independent retailers. Those of you in other states will be getting them soon.
In San Diego, in addition to the East Village tasting room they are served at Kettner Exchange, Addison, and Juniper & Ivy in California.
The tasting room has an on-site distillery used primarily for its canned cocktails and small bites for food.
You & Yours was created by Laura Johnson, a Texas native and San Diego State alumni who is just 31 years old. She popped into her first distillery on a whim when she got bored driving on a road trip and needed a break. She was instantly smitten with distilleries and made it her career.

Mine turned out to taste really good which, of course, is the way it’s supposed to taste. I also enjoyed shaking the shakers!
Y&Y Espresso Martini Recipe
• 1 oz Y&Y Citrus Vodka
• 1 oz Up & At ‘Em Coffee Liqueur
• 1.5 oz fresh espresso coffee
• 1/4 oz chai syrup**
• 1/4 oz orange cordial**
Expressed lemon peel
