Oftentimes, it’s the seemingly little things that make the biggest impressions on people.
For example, my mom makes cards. Birthday cards, get-well cards, cards for special occasions and so forth. Each one is personalized and features a theme of interest to that particular person. When the people receive it, they are incredibly touched that she would take the time to make something so special for them rather than simply sending a store-bought card.
Keep that philosophy in mind this Mother’s Day when coming up with a gift idea for mom. This Mother’s Day here’s how to do something special for your mom.
Instead of taking her out to eat, make her breakfast or lunch. Make sure she stays out of the kitchen and do it all yourself, or yourselves if it’s a team effort. Personally, I am something of a sandwich king. It’s a speciality of mine and considering I make one for lunch practically every day, I have developed a few techniques that mom will love and appreciate.
It all starts with the bread. You simply cannot make a good sandwich if you don’t have good bread. When I want to make a really good sandwich, I bypass the usual store or big-name basic brands and look for breads from La Brea Bakery. It has all kinds of artisan breads – country sourdough, roasted garlic, toasted sunflower honey, rosemary olive oil, just to name a few – that will strike a positive chord with mom.
Lately, I’ve been using the La Brea whole grain. I have to be little careful in my diet because sometimes I tilt towards the pre-diabetic level, so I stay away from white breads as much as possible. The problem with this is most whole wheat or multi-grain breads are as blah as a Monday. But not La Brea’s whole grain; it stands out because it’s delicious with a robust flavor that has a bit of a sweet taste to it.
Le Brea breads are available in the speciality bread section of many grocery stores so they are easy to find.
Now that you have the bread, here’s a big-time sandwich-making tip. Put it in the toaster oven. I usually make turkey and cheese and when the bread toasts and the cheese melts, well, it melts right in your mouth. Mom will melt, too, when she eats it. I top mine with lettuce and tomato, and sometimes add pickle slices. You don’t want to put too much on a sandwich but rather have each ingredient compliment each other. The seeds in the whole grain bread – crusted because of the time spend in the toaster oven – take the taste over the top.
So this Mother’s Day – or for her birthday or just to surprise her on any day – do something special and making a meal for her could well be just what she will appreciate the most.
This also works for dad on Father’s Day (my dad is the one who got me to eating sandwiches for lunch, by the way), for your wife/husband, girlfriend/boyfriend or anyone special in your life.
Happy Mother’s Day mom!
