Suite Parties, Groovy Music And Polynesian Vibes Make This One Of San Diego’s Most Unusual Weekends
Every August I escape into a different world for four days. Think tiki bars, psychedelic colors, surf bands, rum cocktails, elaborate suite parties and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. That’s Tiki Oasis.
My 2026 Tiki Oasis San Diego began on a Thursday in the hotel pool where a surf band played as go-go dancers in front of them were shaking like palm trees in a hurricane and it ended with a Jamacian Crossfire rum tasting on Sunday afternoon.
In between were more bands, DJs, people dressed in all kinds of tropical and 60s attire and over-the-top themed parties in room suites, all keeping with the Psychedelic Tiki theme.
And I did not even make it to any of the seminars. Whew!
Now that it’s all over my shoulder and I am out of the whirlwind of activities that is Tiki Oasis San Diego, I am finally able to comprehend what I did and saw there.Held Aug. 6-9 at the retro Town & Country Inn along Hotel Circle, Tiki Oasis 2026 was a fun psychedelic experience.
I loved all the decor, the way people dressed – some went all out, including a group of guys who wore outfits from The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and I really did enjoy the show – all the live music, afternoons at the pool and especially the late-night themed suite parties.
Ahh, the late-night themed suite parties, the martini in the glass of Tiki Oasis. Many are organized by rum brands who bring in San Diego bartenders to make up small but potently creative cocktails in an environment you have to see to believe. One had a giant tiki god at the entrance that would occasionally spew smoke as if a volcano were about to blow, some were recreations of tiki jungles while others stuck with the Psychedelic Tiki theme
One of the latter was called Once Upon A Time On The Sunset Strip” which was based on a 1960s movie The Trip and when people arrived, they underwent an “audition” with an old-fashioned movie camera and a girl with a director’s megaphone saying “and…ACTION!”
Another was hosted by Hermosa Beach (CA) tiki bar Tiki Kai, one had 70s swing dancers, another had a band and they all had DJs with lighting on the walls and decor tailored to the theme of the party. My favorite, which won the Tiki Oasis Suite Parties People’s Choice award, was a tropical creation of legendary Don the Beachcomber’s bar; what took it over the top was the conversion of the adjacent bedroom into a Polynesian paradise. The best drink I had was a Barbados rum punch that was not at an official party, but one I and my PubClub.com associate Andy Campbell stumbled upon that was kind of a pre-party event.
There were half a dozen of these parties that go from 10 p.m.-midnight. Being hotel rooms, there’s not a lot of room in them so people started lining up in front of one at 9:30 and, after a couple mini drinks from craft bartenders, you move onto the next.
Heck, even standing in line for them is fun. That’s the best place to meet people. You can walk around with a drink in your hand and if you don’t have one, sometimes the hosts will come out and hand you one. I am continually amazed and how welcoming this hosts are and how friendly the people are who go to them. I can’t think of anywhere else or another event that creates this type of social party atmosphere.
I will say that if you are not into crowds and are the least bit claustrophobic, then the suite parties are not for you.
But they sure are perfect for me!
