SUPER BOWL SUNDAY IN THE SOUTH BAY BEACH CITIES
One of the best party days of the year is here, and it’s Super Bowl Sunday.
It starts, of course, with a beer garden! Oh yeah, there’s a race, too. It’s the Redondo Beach Super Bowl 10K but don’t worry about having to run six miles; there’s also a 5K and even a 5K walk for you really lazy people!
I’ve been trying to do the impossible, and that’s getting in shape to run it in a week and a half (I had a little of that flu bug that sidelined me for much of January). I’m calling it 10 Days To The 10K. I’m posting videos of my progress on the PubClub YouTube channel and the links are also on Twitter (@PubClub).
The course is both a bit challenging – the first half of it, it seems, is all uphill – and also gorgeous. Running down The Esplande is about as scenic as a 10K gets anywhere. And as usual, I’m inviting all runners (or anyone who wants to Lyft/Uber in the morning!) to join me for the mid-race beer at Hennessey’s. I should be in there around 9 a.m. Then it’s onto the beer garden!
Here’s a link to the race and the beer garden.
And here’s a link on proper beer garden etiquette – including the peak times to be there and not asking me if I can get you more beers!
After the beer garden, follow the fun party people to our bar crawl. After all, you can’t quit once you’ve got that momentum – we keep going until the game!
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY BARS & HOUSE PARTIES
There’s two places to be for the actual game, house parties or the bars. I can’t help you with the former but for the latter, head to the Hermosa Pier. Sharkeez and Molloy’s both have game-day drink specials, plus you’ll likely find a few Patriots and maybe even a Falcons fans or two. And you’re right there to also bounce around to American Junkie, Waterman’s (which has several Kona beers on tap), the Mermaid and with more Patriots fans at The Deck. Plus, you’re also close to the Mickey McColgans and Barnacles south of the pier and Underground Pub and the new Laurel Tavern north of the pier.

PHOENIX OPEN
Feel like a pre-Super Bowl Sunday road trip!? The Phoenix Open is taking place this week in Scottsdale and it’s better than most Super Bowl parties! This is the wildest party on the PGA Tour (if you’re used to the L.A. Open that’s like going to church compared to the Phoenix Open).
There’s a huge social scene at the food court and the “Sweet 16th” is where fans with beers in hands yell funny things at the golfers who don’t drive the green on the Par 3.
Afterward, there’s the Bird’s Nest which used to be more fun than the tournament, but they have over-priced it trying to turn it into a Vegas nightclub rather than keeping it as a good post-golf party spot. Still, here’s a couple of posts if you want to jump on a plane or put it on your radar for next year:
