Top Beach Event’s 20th Anniversary Is July 20

Signups are now open for one of the top summertime events in the South Bay.
Smackfest, the fun, comical and only occasionally serious dress-up beach volleyball tournament that involves some 800 people in teams dressed in themed costumes, is July 20.
This is the 20th consecutive year for Smackfest, put on by and named after local beach apparel company Smack Sportstwear.
To sign up, go to the events page on Smack Sportswear’s website. Here’s the link: www.smacksportswear.com/smackfest.
And don’t delay; last year’s event sold out in a week. Yes, it’s that popular.
The tournament consists of coed teams playing in pools in different divisions. The teams are in all manner of outfits: Pirates, aliens, 70s disco dancers, you name it. And while there’s no drinking on the beach, there is a considerable certain liveliness to the host bar on the Pier, Sharkeez, much of this fueled by discounts from sponsor Bud Light.
The creatively crazy event is about all the Los Angeles Beach Cities have left in the way of silly beach volleyball tournaments. Manhattan Beach is doing its best to spike 6-man, moving it last year off a weekend to Tuesday and Wednesday (this year’s event is on a Wednesday and Thursday). And Smackfest itself had to locate several hoops to jump through to get this year’s event passed by the Hermosa Beach City Council.
But it passed, and the 20th anniversary remains on the event and social calendar of the South Bay.
