Was this the worst Super Bowl ever? The final score – Seattle Seahawks 29, New England Patriots 13 – shows it was a real clunker.
Only a fourth-quarter outburst of 30 combined points saved some face on what to that point was a 9-0 snoozer. How bad was it? The teams punted seven times. In the first half. Things were getting so bad that people starting saying “hurry up and get to the halftime show!” When Seattle finally scored a touchdown (in the fourth quarter), people cheered not because they were Seahawks fans but because they were happy to see a team cross the goal line rather than line up in punt formation.
As far as boring Super Bowl games go, this one was right up there. Super Bowl LIII, a dull Patrios 13-3 win against the Rams in 2019 was worse. And there have been all those blowouts: Dallas 52, Buffalo 17 in Super Bowl XXVII; San Francisco 49, San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX Tampa Bay 48, Oakland 21 in Super Bowl XXXVII just to name three.
But doees it really matter? Will people not watch the Super Bowl next year because this year’s game was boring? Hardly! For one thing, guess what people are posting about on social media after the game? Think it’s about the winning team? No, it’s about the Bad Bunny halftime show.
The thing is, it really doesn’t matter if the game is close or competitive. Sure, it’s great when it goes down to the final drive, but the Super Bowl is such a spectacle that what the players do on the field is actually secondary to the event as a whole. People go to bars and house parties to watch. For the former, often you have to reserve a spot days in advance.
So the party goes on, year after year. After all, it’s the Super Bowl.
