Top Tips From An Expert

It is difficult to be a vegan and vegetarian during social times, especially at parties.
It can be especially challenging at an Oscars viewing party. All your friends are gathered for the show – the red carpet, “oh look at that dress,” the failed jokes of the host and the awards themselves – and food is set out on a table that includes all kinds of meat, leaving very little pickings for those who choose to have an animal-free diet
But what can you have to eat at these happenings while everyone else is gorging on food items that are off limits to you? If you’re a true vegan, you can’t even have any deviled eggs!
But not to worry, with the right knowledge vegans can enjoy the evening and not go hungry. PubClub.com went to to Nyisha Rylander of puravidavegan.com, to get some advice for vegans and vegetarians on how to cope with the food at an Oscars party. She provides these five easy tips:
1.) Bring at least two dishes for you, that you also know others will enjoy, such as a green bean casserole and sweet potatoes.
2.) Don’t show up starving. Eat a little at home before going to the party. That way, if there’s not a lot of food options for you, you won’t be hungry.
3) Don’t make snide remarks at the table when people are eating meat. Conversely, if you’re a meat eater, don’t make snide remarks at the vegan or vegetarian.
4.) Don’t bring up the fact you are a vegan or vegetarian unless you are asked. Be polite. This is a big one.
5.) Remember you’re there to be with family or friends and not really to eat. Keep that in mind. And keep calm.
So you see, you can walk the red carpet, so to speak, when it comes to enjoying the party while also being satisfied from a food standpoint.
