A Cheap Meal Is Better With Pepper

It was 10 o’clock after election night, and I had just spent a 14-hour day working one of the voting stations.

That in itself is a story – or, rather, a blog post – and I was tired and hungry. So I walked across the street to the Von’s grocery store, and for some really I really wanted fried chicken.  Guess when I’m really tired, my true Southern culinary roots come out on me.

Well all Von’s had was nearly a full chicken and I wanted some sides, too, so I wound up in a place in the store where I rarely venture: the frozen food section. In front of my eyes was a Banquet Chicken Fried Chicken frozen dinner.

The picture on the box made it look delicious but I stood there for several moments; I had not had a frozen dinner in so long I could not remember and I could picture myself sitting down when I finally got home saying, “oh man, bad choice. This is terrible!”

But, at less than $2 the price was right for 10 o’clock at night, it came with mashed potatoes and a scoop of corn and what’s more, I figured I could douse it with enough pepper to make it at least palatable. And, for good measure, I picked up two of them. What the heck, right!?

Well I’m here to report on my findings. On election night I microwaved it and a couple weeks later I put the second one in the oven and baked it.

Microwaved Banquet Frozen Dinner Review

Well, I was right. Put enough pepper on it and it was palatable. But that’s about it.

The meat was mushy and had it not said so on the box, I would have never guessed it was chicken. The chicken did have gravy that melted but let me just say, hope you won’t be eating this gravy for Thanksgiving dinner.

The mashed potatoes were okay and the corn was fine.

Rating (0-5): 1.

Oven Baked Banquet Frozen Dinner Review

Surprisingly, the meat was almost as mushy as it was coming out of the microwave. I was, however, able to at least detect a taste of chicken.

For the rest of it, there was not a whole lot of difference, except the corn was better and even borderline tasty.

Rating: (0-5): 2
