KFC calls it the company’s “best chicken sandwich ever” but a test customer had an even more lively description, referring to it as a “game changer” in the fast food chicken sandwich market.
The subject of this adulation is the new new KFC Chicken Sandwich. It is a quarter-pound, all-white meat, double-breaded, Extra Crispy™ chicken breast filet with a toasted buttery brioche bun, crispier and thicker pickles than before and the Colonel’s real mayo or spicy sauce as the condiment.
One customer called it “game changer” during the an initial tasting test last spring in Orlando, Fla. It will be in all of KFC’s 4,000 restaurants in the USA by the end of February.
It will cost $3.99 by itself with a combo meal consisting of the sandwich, the KFC Secret Recipe Fries and medium drink going for $6.99 (prices and participation may vary).
The KFC food innovation team painstakingly tested each ingredient for the new sandwich down to the pickles. They tried eight variations of thickness and collaborated with six different bakeries on more than 10 recipes in order to find the right bun. The idea was to create a sandwich that matches KFC’s world-famous fried chicken.
“We tested the new KFC Chicken Sandwich in Orlando last spring, and we nearly doubled our sales expectations, so we knew that we had a winner,” said Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer, KFC U.S. “Many customers hadn’t considered KFC as a part of the chicken sandwich conversation, but anyone who tastes this sandwich will know, without a doubt, that we’re playing to win.”
