Sin City #1 In This ApartmentGuide.com List But Where Is Los Angeles?
Tacos are a major part of the food culture in Southern California, so much so that when someone mentions “California cuisine,” tacos spring instantly to mind for most residents.
The passion for them in the state was born from California surfers coming out of the water in Baja, Mexico and eating them at roadside stands. Fish tacos in particular became as big a part of the lifestyle as surfing itself. Their love of love of this Mexican creation quickly spread to the Golden State and now every town along the coast from Santa Monica to San Diego has a Taco Tuesday, and tacos are the “go-to” food for locals seven days a week.
So when I saw that Las Vegas was named the Best City In America For Taco Lovers in an analysis by ApartmentGuide.com, I said “what!?”
Sure enough, taking into account the number of taco restaurants per 100,000 residents, Sin City emerged No. 1.
I guess that actually makes sense. Vegas has a dispositional amount of restaurants to residents anyway, since most of the customers are tourists. It’s just that one never thinks of Sin City when it comes to being a mecca for taco lovers. Vegas has 454 taco (Mexican, really) restaurants with 70.43 per 100,000 people, tops on the list.
Number two makes no sense at all; it’s Salt Lake City. It has 52.84 taco restaurants per 100,000 people.
The top California city is – are you ready for this – Bakersfield. The home of the late country music star Buck Owens and four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears has 47.97 taco restaurants per 100,000 people to put it fourth on the list.
Anaheim, CA, which has a couple of highly-recommended taco stands I have yet to try, is 10th at 42.90. That’s four spots behind its neighboring city of Santa Ana (45.08).
Other cities in border states figured to score well here and they did: Tucson is seventh (44.87) and San Antonio is eighth (44.64). Laredo and Houston are 11th and 12th, respectively (42.04 and 41.41).
And where is Los Angeles, you ask? Nowhere to be found. The reason for that is the population is so huge and also LA County is comprised of 86 different small cities. One of those is Manhattan Beach, which has the best Taco Tuesday in all of L.A., at OB’s Pub, when one factors in the tacos and the singles scene.
And PubClub.com does, when evaluating things such as top Taco Tuesday restaurants.
