Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Or rum in a cocktail. A boat drink, as Jimmy Buffett fans call them.
National Rum Day is Aug. 16, and while that’s enough to bring out the pirate and wench in some souls. In2022 it it falls on a Tuesday. So ditch Taco Tuesday for a week. Make it a day/evening and/or night of rum drinks.
With apologies to the Navy Grog, and Rum Punch, the quintessential rum drink is, of course, the Mai Tai. But for those who have ever been to a tiki bar, then you know there are various variations of them, all with whacky names like the Curious George and the Dead Reckoning, all of which contain multiple rums mixed with various juices.
True rum lovers know that good rum drinks involve more than one rum. And they are made with juices as the primary mixers.
Rum drinks are, of course, best enjoyed with others somewhere on or within sight of the water. Ideally an ocean. While a boat.
If that is not possible, then improvise for National Rum Day, which on 2019 is Friday, Aug. 16.
By the way, with all the National “Whatever” Days now, it’s important to note that National Rum Day is one of the originals.
The Mai Tai Recipe
• 1 oz (2 tablespoons) dark rum. 1 oz (2 tablespoons) amber rum. 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice. 1/2 oz (1 tablespoon) Cointreau or triple sec. 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice. 1 teaspoon orgeat syrup* or 1 drop pure almond extract. 1 teaspoon superfine granulated sugar. Dash of grenadine.
• Garnish with an orange slice.
