Dry January?
Not on PubClub.com’s watch.
And I’m not alone.
The New York Post spoke to 100 people who, yes, were in a bar, about Dry January and received responses from “it’s dumb” to “I’m not a quitter.” 10 Barrel Brewing’s Pub Beer is holding a hosting a series of giveaways, fundraisers and mega-limited beer sales throughout Wet January. Utilizing a celebrity look-alike and calling him Leonardo DiCheapio, it has created an Instagram post and even has phone number – 1-833-69CHEAP – to call for “help.”
Now there is something called Damp January, where people cut down on drinking alcohol rather than giving it up entirely for the month. I suppose that’s for people who can’t make a decision. I would hate to be waiting behind them in a line to order something; it would take FOREVER!
Look, if you want to cut out drinking for a month that’s fine with me. But why not just limit yourself during the entire year? That would be better for your health rather than the stop-and-start philosophy of Dry January or Damp January.

Now let’s consider what those taking part in Dry January or Damp January are missing out on, social wise. Starting right off the bat, there’s New Year’s Day when Bloody Marys or mimosas are as much of a New Year’s Day tradition for many as black eyed peas.
There’s sports with the newly expanded 12-team college football playoff and the NFL playoffs and that means enthusiastic alumni and fans whooping it up and pounding down drinks in sports bars. There’s people back from spending mostly dry time with their family after the holidays who are anxious to go out with their friends again. There are ski resorts and with that ski apres.
Staying dry in January is difficult. There are more challenges – multiple temptations where alcohol is part of the environment – the first month of the new year than many people realize.
So yeah, if you’re doing Dry January or Damp January, be aware of the stumbling blocks in the month.
It says you tried something and nothing wrong with that at all. Cheers!
I’m trying Dry January for the first time, but I like your idea of a Damp January. Mainly it’s testing my will and determination. I feel like if I can’t stick to a plan for a month, then what does that say about me??
