The Flora-Bama Bar’s Annual Beach Bash

They drink – on the beach and in the bar – they party and they throw fish.
For charity.
This is where I would like to be the weekend of April 22-24 in 2012. It is always the last weekend of April every year and want to be there as long as I’m able to lift a beer held by a branded coozie.
It’s the Interstate Mullet Toss, the Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party on the Florida-Alabama line put on by the famous Flora-Bama bar (if you’ve seen Jimmy Buffett’s “Bama Breeze” video, you’ll understand the location) across from the beach at Perdido Key.

What the heck is a mullet toss? Well, it’s not throwing bad haircuts or the people under them, but rather a fish called a mullet. It’s a contest that will raise $20,000 for local charities.
But what it really is, is a beach party. Rather, a beach bash. Southern style!
Thousands of people come out to party, toss some fish like a shot put you see in the Summer Olympics ($10 entry fee) drink beers on the beach – hey Californians, this is legal in Florida!– and party in the famous Flora-Bama, a true Southern beach bar if ever there was one.
The way to do it is to stay in Orange Beach, AL, take the Flora-Bama bus to the event (for a mere 5 bucks) and party until you stagger out of the bar and back onto the bus.
It’s a good ‘ol Southern somewhat redneck beach party. And this Southern native wants to be there for it! For a good few laughs, grab some beers and check out the Flora-Bama description of the event.
Oh, and there’s a bikini contest too! Where it all ends, I can’t fathom my friends. But for this weekend, I’ll toss out my anchor right here.
Other Great Places To Be This Weekend!
