Local Musicians Performing The Same Day As Jimmy Buffett
They have been on stage at the Hermosa Beach Summer Concerts, Redondo Beach Lobsterfest and other local festivals.
And now the Hermosa Beach, CA, band Barley is getting on the big stage as it is one of the bands playing the huge music festival in San Diego called KAABOO Del Mar. Showtime is Friday, Sept. 16, making it one of the opening acts of the three-day event. That’s the same day as Jimmy Buffett.
Needless to say, this is a huge break for the band, a big-time gig that could launch it onto the national stage. It’s happened before; Hermosa Beach, which has almost as many talented bands and musicians as it does beach volleyball courts, is the home the hugely successful Pennywise.
“We’ve put in a lot of hard work over the years and built up to this level.” said lead singer Brent Reger. “We’re finally getting a shot at the big stage. It’s kind of a dream come true and hopefully this will lead to things even bigger and better.
“We took a lot of gigs in the beginning that maybe we really didn’t really want to take, but we got the experience and got better and better as a band. Then we did a huge release party in Redondo Beach and blew it out, and that kind of got the attention of some people who make big decisions.”
Anther big break was winning the Saint Rocke “Battle of the Beach” that earned it a performance headlining the Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series. That’s a weekly event each Sunday in August on the sand in front of 5,000 people.
The band plays original music, mostly having to do with California and the California lifestyle in a style that’s fast-paced, lively but also down-home and somewhat spiritual.
“The music is beach and folk rock, really kind of hard to describe,” Reger said.
What’s not hard to describe is its full, rich sound. Barley is an eight-piece band (with a steamy female bass player, it must be pointed out) that includes horns and keyboards.
KAABOO is a huge music, arts and comedy festival taking place at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Sept. 16-18. It will have tens of thousands of people – mostly from the San Diego area – in a big-time social atmosphere.
Barley plays at 3:30 p.m. Buffett takes the stage at 8 p.m.
Single-day tickets are $115. Barley is organizing a party bus to the show from the South Bay with the band. It depart Hermosa Beach at 10 a.m., and return after Buffett’s show. The cost is just $24. Sign up in advance on the band’s website.
