Gluten-Free Food And Drinks Highlight Menu, But Is it San Francisco-Style Fare?
I received a press release that left me thinking that the people involved are either really creative or those city folks in New York may not know a heck of a lot about Mexican food and margaritas.
Without the benefit of being able to get “boots on the ground” and actually finding out first-hand, I’ll just tell you what they are up to, and if you are in the Big Apple you can go there and decide for yourself.
A pair of food chains in New York City, Blockheads and Benny’s Burritos West, are what the release calls “San Fransisco-style Mexican” restaurants. And they make their margaritas with vodka! Are they pulling my sombrero!?
Now please understand that I live in Southern California – which has more Mexican restaurants than probably even Mexico – and I’ve been to San Francisco many times. So I’m not sure what a “San Fransisco-style Mexican” restaurant is exactly. Tacos with fried rice and won tons instead of chips and salsa?
Perhaps it’s just a way of recognizing the fact the restaurants have a glutnen-free menu and they assume San Franciscoans to be conscious of such things. This is not meant to criticize mind you – not at all – I’m just wondering if the people in New York know that most (but certainly not all) of the great Mexican restaurants are in Southern California and not Northern California.
We also use tequila in our margaritas. I found it unusual, and also a bit intriguing, that Blockheads and Benny’s use vodka. In fact, they are now using gluden-free, sugar-free vodkas from Devotion Spirits, Inc. They serve a Devotion Blood Orange Margarita and a a Devotion Wild Cherry margarita. They look and sound great, but I’m just scratching my head over a vodka margarita.
Devotion Blood Orange Margarita is comprised of Devotion’s Blood Orange vodka mixed with a splash of fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice, simple syrup, and mandarin orange, shaken and poured over ice.
The Devotion Wild Cherry Margarita, features Devotion’s Wild Cherry vodka combined with fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice, simple syrup, and a touch of grenadine, shaken and poured over ice, and garnished with a cherry.
A Frozen Devotion Cosmopolitan and the Frozen Flag drinks are available at select locations.
Go give ’em a try.
Cheers!
