Living In A Jimmy Buffett Song At Sunset In Marina del Rey, CA

“Drink it up,” Jimmy Buffett sings in one of his songs.” It’s been a lovey cruise.”
It was a lovely cruise indeed on a warm Wednesday evening in Marina del Rey, CA. I came to this obvious conclusion as I was standing on the deck of Hornblower Cruises ship during one of its twice-weekly cocktail sunset cruises.
A beautiful day was patiently making its transition from late afternoon to early evening, people were cruising all around us on both land and water and and sailboats – participants in the California Yacht Club’s weekly regatta – surrounded us like escort vessels, seemingly leading us back to the dock.

The sun was reluctantly giving up its position in the sky to the stars as it slowly disappeared behind the Santa Monica Mountains and as I stood on the top outdoor deck, I took a moment to pause a conversation and look at all that was happening around me.
And what immediately came to mind was that Buffett song.

I certainly wasn’t the only one having a good time. This was a particularly lively sunset cruise, as people were mingling like mad and playing games like cornhole and oversized Connect Four.
The two-hour cruise – which, at just $37 with a glass of champagne, two drinks and appetizers is a screamin’ deal – goes from 6-8 from June thru September in Marina del Rey, Long Beach and Newport Beach. Once you burn through those two free drink tickets, you can get more beer, wine and cocktails (I can report they don’t skimp on the rum when I asked for a “boat drink) for between $6-12.

The only problem with it is that it’s so nice, it seems to go by too fast. Even tho we were going slowly back and forth through the marina, too soon the harbor lights came into view and I and the others had to bid farewell to this lovely cruise.
But, like another Buffett song, “Barometer Soup,” says,
Come along let’s have some fun
The hard work has been done
We’ll barrel roll into the sun
Just for starters
Cheers!
