Sensationalized Reporting Causing Panic In Florida
First, it was to rip through Puerto Rico.
Then it turned to the north and missed hitting the island.
Not it is “barreling towards Florida” and has caused so much panic that Florida State University pulled the plug on its Saturday night game with Boise State, relocating it to its campus in Tallahassee. Now the hurricane isn’t expected to reach somewhere in Florida until Monday night.
It was a Category 1 but is forecast to be a Category 4 by the time it reaches Florida. Or wait, it may be a Category 3. It will hit all of Florida. It will hit southern Florida. It will hit northern Florida and roll up Georgia. Wait – it will hit the Bahamas and go up the Florida coast without making landfall (that’s the latest prediction).
Weather forecasters are all over the map trying to project the path and strength of Hurricane Dorian. And it’s causing panic throughout the state of Florida. Relocating the FSU game was a major logistical move and is costing the city of Jacksonville millions of dollars, as it was to be a big event in the city. Now the stadium will sit empty on Saturday night while the hurricane will still be hundreds of miles off the coast – and likely a couple of hundred miles south of Jacksonville.
The original forecasts predicted the hurricane would hit Florida as early as Saturday. Now it’s due to roll up on 100 or so miles from the coast and if it makes landfall at all, it would be in North and/or South Carolina.
Because of all of those early – and erroneous – predictions from weather forecasters, hotels have canceled reservations and tourists are being turned away on what was going to be a big travel time for Florida on Labor Day Weekend. Travelers who had planned for months about getting away to the Florida beaches for the long holiday instead settled for backyard barbeques, local festivals or watching the opening of college football on their TVs.
Governors in both Florida and Georgia have declared a state of emergency, stretching resources to the limit.
Hurricanes can change course at the last moment and its certainly wise to be prepared in case it hits (and if it doesn’t, then people have all those supplies for the next one) and they are not to be taken lightly. But with weather forecasters all over the map trying to predict Dorian’s path and strength, it’s causing a lot of headaches for a lot of people in a place that calls itself the Sunshine State.
