Road Tripping Travel Questions Answered
Going on a road trip is one of the best ways to travel.
You pack and take what you want – no worrying about extra bag fees here! – jump in the car and take off for your destination.
But to maximize the experience, there’s certain things to do, so here’s how to plan a road trip.
Preparation, Planning & Packing For A Road Trip
Proper road trip planning starts with knowing ow long you will be on the road – is it a day trip to a destination or a multi-day drive? That’s your first order or preparation.
You also need to be sure your car is running good, and before you leave wash it and fill it up with gas the previous day. That last point can wind up saving a lot of time because if you have to make one stop before you get out of your neighborhood the delays will suddenly pile up like rush-hour traffic. And be sure you’ve got music that everyone agrees with so there’s no arguing in the vehicle.
You also need to plan out the trip in advance. You’ll need to know cities and towns along the way for bathroom breaks and gas stations. If you’re on a multi-day trip you’ll need to figure out where you are staying for the night(s) and the distances from one point to another. You will need to consult with your co-road trippers in advance about this; some people like to blast as many miles with as few stops as possible in a day while others require near-constant stops and you won’t cover nearly as many miles with this method.
Road Tripping Food Tip: Either pack your lunch and pull over somewhere scenic and have a picnic. Another fun thing to do is fine a one-of-a-kind restaurant along your route. Don’t settle for the fast-food and chains – you can get those anywhere.
If there’s lot of choices to spend the night, then be a bit flexible.
Packing for a road trip is much easier than for a plane trip. You don’t have to choose between “this shirt and that shirt” but have the luxury of saying “what the heck, I’ll take both.” Still, be careful not to overpack. Keep others in the vehicle in mind. You don’t want to be overcrowded and you certainly don’t want luggage blocking the windows.
Packing Tip: Touch base frequently with other road trippers to be sure they do not overpack and ask what they plan to bring that you can all share. There’s no need to have two or three coolers, for example.
Leave Room To Be Spontaneous And Seeing The Sights
Take full advantage of being on a road trip. If you have the time, stop along the way to see the sights, whether it’s beautiful coastal scenery or a cute little town. Maybe there’s even a roadside attraction, like a giant lobster.
Road trips do take planning but they are more fun and you’ll get more out of it if you are also a bit spontaneous.. If you see something that catches your eye, stop or turn off to investigate.
Make being on your road trip as fun as your ultimate destinations.
