Okay, now that the Super Bowl is finished, the confetti has been cleaned up and the victory parade complete, it’s time for the world of sports to stop and take a breather. Head to the bench.

Put those jerseys away until the next kickoff. Or the NFL Draft.

All we have between now and next fall are a bunch of temporary diversions. March Madness. The Masters, the Indy 500, a couple of majors in golf. I hesitate to include Wimbledon because who watches Wimbledon anymore? Can anyone who is not actually in the field name any player in it? Tennis is as yesterday as polyester pants. And I used to cover the sport.

Yes, there is baseball, but other than MLB Opening Day, it’s 161 other games of a very long season. The NHL and NBA go on and on and on, so much so that by the time the championship rolls around only diehard fans have any interest in watching them. This year we do have the Winter Olympics, and that will keep us entertained on slow evenings but really, since a lot of sports went to the professionals it’s not the same anymore.

World Cup 2026 is this year and right here in the USA (tho some countries, including Germany, are considering boycotting it because of the current political environment in America) but that’s a niche sports for Uncle Sam’ers. I do acknowledge, tho, its importance to fans in other parts of the world.

Not that there is anything wrong with this, mind you. We all need a break and the same goes for our games. There are other things to pay attention to now, such as major party events such as St. Patrick’s Day, warm weather, beaches and lakes. Vacations.

Football is the ideal sport because it occurs during the fall and winter. We go from beaches and backyard BBQs  to cold weather when a freezing wind blows and heavy snowfalls make playing the game difficult – and fun to watch on TV. We can curl up in front of fireplaces – or gather in sports bars – and it has the added bonus of having not one but two different levels to root for, the NFL and college football.

So go ahead and take your break, sports. We’ll see you again in the fall.
