College football’s opening weekend created more questions than answers, as usual, tho at first glance maybe there’s more to Dion than just neon, both Clemson and LSU are looking more like paper tigers than real ones and as T-town braces for an orange invasion of another kind the Tiders are saying “what quarterback issues” while hoping they will be saying that after Week 2.
It’s still to early to give up going to the beach or the lake to watch the likes of Ball State-Georgia and Youngstown State-Ohio State but come sunset it will be allright with Bevo going to Bama.
Now onto this week’s games. All times Pacific because The Pigskin Prognosticator lives on the West Coast.
• Nebraska at Colorado (9 a.m., FOX)
The Prime Timers looked ready for prime time last week – tho to put things in perspective, the perception of TCU was a bit bloated stemming from its underved spot in the playoffs last year – and in just one week have created a a big-game atmosphere in Boulder. There’s a lot of buildup because of the classic Colorado-Nebraska rivalry in the old Big 8 days but the Shuckers are just a hollow hulk of thier past greatness. One potental element in in their favor – the Neons are last in rushing D after the first week – but this win will go to the Ralphies and they won’t need trick play or overtime to do it. Winner: Colorado
• Ole Miss at Tulane (12:30 p.m. ESPN2)
From a pure, kick-back-and-enjoy standpoint, this is the top game of the week. Both teams treat defense as a glass of water at a tailgate party – hey, get that out of here! – so have a Hottie Toddie or a Hurricane and be entertained. Winner: Ole Miss
• Texas A&M at Miami (12:30 p.m., ABC)
The Cadets are hoping to be fully loaded when they storm into South Florida, dodging one hurricane while running smack into another one. The Canes are said to be rising with Mario Cristobal being the eye of the storm, but that has been said nearly every year this century with every coach. As for their part, the Jimobs are jumping for joy because of the somewhat desperate Petrino push but the real difference could be that the right quarterback is actually on the field for a change. It will be tight but in the end, the ‘ol Crystobal says that the Canes coash will continue his tradition of playing not to lose which, of course, results in losing. Winner: Texas A&M
• Texas at Alabama (4 p.m., ESPN)
The entire state of Texas is coming to Tusclaoosa this weekend and the Tide is hoping to see that this Jalen QB is as good as the previous one. If the current one has put his frying pan feet into the cupboard when he feels the rush closing in, then he will be cooking like a celebrity chef. If not, then he will be in hot water. Yet the Tide’s biggeest concern is injuries to three DBs, already the thinneset position on the field. Fortunately for the Bama boys, the Texas signal caller is not exactly known around the Forty Acres as being a prolific long-ball passer. One other thing going for the Tide is the fact the game isn’t being played in the morning like last year’s close contest. Bama will be wide awake for this one. Winner: Alabama
• UCLA at San Diego State (4:30 p.m., CBS)
The Baby Bears nearly got caught napping last week – only a late play-not-to-lose move by the opposing coach saved them – yet this week will enjoy the short ride down to sunny San Diego to a stadium that for many fans is easier to get to than their home field, the Rose Bowl. Considering the Aztecs fans only took up half the stadium last week, this will almost be like a home game for the Trampolines. Expect them to keep bouncing. By the way, this is the same venue where Jimmy Buffett played his last concert. Winner: UCLA
• Stanford at USC (7:30 p.m., FOX)
The Cardinal meets the cardinal and gold and while the former has been giving the latter fits ever since the “hey what’s your deal?,” Pete Carroll-to-Jim-Harbaugh incident, this year it’s going to be all Troy. The Trees are bare and have nothing to slow down the Caleb Calvary, which will be running wild all evening so much that the Trojan horse, Traveler, is going to have to take rest breaks. Winner: USC
• Aubun at Cal (7:30 p.m., ESPN)
Well done Plainsmen, for scheduling an out-of-conference game in a top conferience (for another year anyway) yet against a team so bad it has won just 10 games the past two years and hasn’t been good since Aaron Rodgers was quarterback. But hey, at least the Papa Bears are better than U Mass. This will be a breeze for the Freeze folks, who get to chill out in the land of the Berkely beatnicks. Winner: Auburn
