Team USA begins its World Cup Qatar 2022 play on Monday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m., ET. The Americans are in Group B and open against Wales. To familiarize you with this not exactly well-known opponent PubClub.com provides this insight into the team and the country.
The USA has played Wales twice before, most recently in 2020. That ended in a 0-0 tie. In 2003, the USA won 2-0. Both were “international friendlies,” which in soccers speak means they were exhibition games. The 2020 World Cup match is the first one that counts.
The Football Association of Wales, which is responsible for fielding the team, is the third-oldest national football association in the world, having been formed in 1876. It has only been to the World Cup one time, that coming in 1958 when it reached the quarterfinals.
The country’s most famous resident is actress beauty Katherine Zeta Jones. Other famous people from Wales are actor Richard Burton, singer Shirley Bassey (she sang the theme song to Goldfinger, the first James Bond film) and Tom Jones.
Wales is the third-largest country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is on the island of Great Britain to the west of England. The majority of people living in Wales are British citizens.
It is a small country – a Wales tourism PR rep once told me you could ride a golf cart from one side of it to the other tho I’m pretty sure she was joking – that is about the size of New Jersey. Its capitol city, Cardiff, is a pretty good place for nightlife.
Most of the country is mountainous but there are coastal areas on its north, south and western sides and it has castles and canals. Cool, right!? Visitors can fly there either directly or through any of the UK’s major hubs. Its flag is white on the top and red on the bottom with a dragon on it.
You can get around by train, car and bus and even on a bike. You can also walk thanks to the Wales Coast Path. The latter would take a while to do the whole thing because it is 870 miles. Apparently you can take a golf cart, too.
The national dish of Wales is cawl which is not nearly as bad as it sounds. It’s a Welsh stew of meat or fish and vegetables. Traditional Welsh crempogau are thick pancakes.

To drink, Wales is having a revival of sorts in its whiskey industry and it is experiencing a huge growth in beer, most notably with Welsh Ale. One of the thing to do when visiting Wales is going to its distilleries and breweries. It also has wineries and several cozy pubs. Sounds good to PubClub!
Frankly, it’s a difficult country not to like, even its it’s your World Cup opponent.
