The Big Gig may get a few big downpours on its opening night and first weekend.

The weather forecast for Summerfest in Milwaukee, billed as the “World’s Largest Music Festival” and known as “The Big Gig” to locals, calls for thunderstorms is opening night and again on Friday and Saturday. The Fourth of July weather is to be party cloudy.

Summerfest, Milwaukee’s giant music festival, kicks off its 50th anniversary on Wednesday, June 28. It is featuring throwback ticket prices of $5 and the headliner band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The festival runs through July 8.

The Milwaukee weather will likely make this a wet – if not wet and wild – opening.  There is a 90% chance of rain with thunderstorms predicted to hit the area on Wednesday. The temperature is to be in the mid-70s in the daytime and in the upper 60s at night.

After a party cloudy day on Thursday – with the temperature rising into the 80s – thunderstorms are expected to return on Friday. There is an 80% chance of rain on Friday when Paul Simon is the headline performer. The showers will continue into the morning hours on Saturday, giving way to party cloudy skies the rest of the day and night.

Daytime temperatures will be in the mid-70s but it will be cool at night, dropping into the low 60s. It is always advisable to have a light jacket at Summerfest as the wind blows off the lake and it can feel colder than the air temperature.

Sunday is to be the best weather day the first few days of Summerfest, with mostly sunny skies and a high of 75 with a low of 62.

Summerfest is silent on Monday, July 3, and for the 4th, cloudy skies and the mid-70s/mid-60s temperatures are predicted. By Wednesday, July 5, there will be few clouds with mostly sunshine. The headliner that night is Summerfest regular Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers.

No more rain is scheduled the rest of the festival, which runs thru July 8. It is know as “The Big Gig” to locals.
