That’s a lot to swallow.
The Bamboo Room, within the tiki bar Three Dots and a Dash, has a Mai Tai made with what it claims are the original ingredients created by Victor Bergeron, or Trader Vic, often credited for creating the now-famous Polynesian cocktail. And it cost $800. At least according to Yahoo! Life.
According to legend, Bergeron added .lime juice, orgeat (almond syrup), and orange curaçao with Jamaican rum to a few friends who wandered into his Oakland (CA) bar adn they said “Maita’i roa a’e,” which loosely means “the best of all.”
PubClub.com looked up the drinks menu of the Bamboo Room and saw three Mai Tais, one of which is called a the Trader Vic Mai Tai (made with Aged Jamaican Rum, 55 Martinique Rhum Agricole Blanc, Dry Curacao, Lime, Almond Orgeat, Overproof Float15), that are priced at $15 and $16.
For those wanting to impress business clients or friends, there are a couple of group drinks with high price tags. The Treasure Chest (Venezuelan rum, ace of spades, passion fruit, guava, lemon, tangerine, serves 6-8) is priced at $425. The Port Royale (15 Year Old Appleton Estate Jamaican Rum, Yellow Chartreuse, Mango, Lime, Pineapple, Honey serves 6-8), cost $375.
The history of the Mai Tai is a somewhat of a mystery, like the origin of many famous cocktails. Both Bergeron and Donn Beach, aka Donn the Beachcomber, are both credited for creating it.
Three Dots and a Dash is bit hidden, located at 435 N Clark St., in the alley. Its website is:Three Dots and a Dash – The Bamboo Room).
