The evolution of San Diego Gaslamp nightlife continues to evolve, as PubClub.com reveals that a hookah bar is going into the location of the former Tropical Savor on Fourth Ave.
With the building undergoing a complete renovation, I talked with one of the builders who provided the information.
Meanwhile, the owners who are building a bar in the old Hennessey’s location across the street at Fourth & G are being tight-lipped about what’s going into that place. Not even my top source, the Queen of the Gaslamp, has any hint of it. And it’s driving her crazy!
I do have an update on Patrick’s around the corner on F Street. Apparently the new owners – operators of Blind Burrow – are not planning any major changes. They are, tho, cleaning up the place, which it needs, especially after being neglected for so long when it closed during the first months of the pandemic.
Back to Tropical Savor. It certainly won’t be called that anymore because it won’t have a tropical theme. And it’s going to be several months – most likely summertime – before it’s open for business.
When the builder told me what’s going in there, he beamed “it’s different!”
I hated to blow smoke in his face (pun intended) but I told him that’s not the case. There’s already a hookah lounge around the corner (Fourth & G, albeit in front of the Golden West where a lot of homeless people hang out, not exactly making it a desirable experience if you ask me) and a block away on Fifth Ave. Suddenly, he wasn’t beaming quite so much anymore.
Still, he said management is devoted to providing excellent customer service and it will also be serving very good food. He also said they are not involved in Taste & Thirst next door, which earlier I reported may (or may not) be undergoing changes because the landlord has asked people living in the apartments above it to move.
Shamrock St. Patrick’s Day Block Party
The Smamrock St. Patrick’s Day block party is back for 2022. Held on lower Fifth Ave., it features DJs, Irish step dancing and bands all day and night headlined by the Young Dubliners. It is on the Saturday before St. Paddy’s Day, March 12. For the complete lineup of bands and information on ticket prices, click here on PubClub’s Shamrock St. Patrick’s Day preview article.
Where To Get Jell-O Shots In The Gaslamp Quarter

Do you like Jell-O shots? They are what the fun people bring to a good house party and there are at least two Gaslamp Quarter bars that serve them.
One is to be expected and that is Trailer Park After Dark. After all, this is a cut-loose place thriving with 80s music, dancing, PBRs that come in a brown paper bag and cans of good ‘ol Busch beer for 4 bucks.
The other tho, is quite surprising. It’s Coastal Cantina, a Mexican restaurant and bar located on E Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues, next to a classic San Diego dive bar, Star Bar.
Yes, a place that serves pretty danged good (and potent) margaritas has Jell-O shots. They are $3 here and the same at Trailer Park After Dark.
By the way, if you need a lesson in how to properly do a Jell-O shot, watch PubClub’s TikTok video.
