Labor Day Weekend is both a sad time and a celebration for Jimmy Buffett fans.
On the one hand, it’s the anniversary of his death (Sept. 1, 2023). On the other hand, it’s a time to remember him and to “keep the party going” as he said just before his passing. That is why there is the huge Just A Few Friends Key West celebration and all Margaritaville properties have a brand-wide Day of Service on Jimmy Buffett Day, September 4.
In San Diego it takes place at the poolside 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar. It features music from the Buffett Beach Band – a nationally touring Jimmy Buffett tribute band – a travel and experience-themed silent auction and interactive entertainment. A portion of proceeds will benefit the San Diego Music Foundation, helping support local music education, outreach and community programming.
It takes place from 5-9 p.m., and is free to attend.
Jimmy Buffett himself was scheduled to officially open San Diego’s Margaritaville in October 2023. After his passing, longtime Coral Reefer Band member Mac McAnally took his place, bringing tears and smiles to those of us who were there.

“We are inviting both travelers and locals to join us for an unforgettable evening of tropical cocktails, live music and a silent auction – all while supporting a meaningful cause,” said Miguel Lopez, General Manager of Margaritaville Hotel San Diego. “Our Day of Service festivities are an opportunity to support the local community, celebrate the power of music and create experiences that bring people together for a great cause.”
The headliner, Buffett Beach Band, will take the stage at 6 p.m. There is also a blender bike competition – it’s Margaritaville, after all – photo booths and a silent auction. The party will continue will all weekend long, featuring the Keep the Party Going souvenir cup special, various live musical performances and several fun pop-up experiences.
