The big thing taking place in San Diego this June is the World Cup. Rather than list them all here, click this link for the ultimate guide for watching the World Cup in San Diego. It has everything you need to know. I can tell you that the place to be on Friday, June 12 is Piazza della Famiglia, for it is putting up a big screen for USA-Paraguay. That game kicks off at 6 p.m., and during and after it there’s great party action at Princess Pub, Coca Maya and down a block at Waterfront Bar and later, Kettner Exchange.
Now, onto other news and happenings at San Diego bars and restaurants.
• Karl Strauss Brewing Company is offering 15% off its six packs of Red Trolley Ale bottles to-go every Friday at the brewery’s four San Diego County brewpubs in 4S Ranch, Carlsbad, Downtown, and Sorrento Mesa. Red Trolley Ale was one of the very first beers ever brewed by San Diego’s first post-Prohibition brewery in 1989. The brewery says it pairs extremely well with anything that’s on your summertime grill. Six packs of Red Trolley Ale are atlocal retail outlets like Albertsons, Ralphs, Total Wine & More and Vons are at a discounted price, as well.
• City Tacos’ Taco of the Month for June is the Chicken Crunch Taco, featuring a crispy fried chicken filet seasoned with oregano over a bed of grilled cheese on a corn tortilla. It’s topped with arugula, red bell pepper, tomato, onion, and avocado, and it’s finished with a limón-orange vinaigrette. It cost $5.25 at each of City Tacos’ six San Diego locations in Encinitas, La Mesa, North Park, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Sorrento Mesa.
• MICHELIN Guide-recognized Cloak & Petal in Little Italy is opening Black Mizu Café inside its restaurant this summer with an anticipated ribbon cutting in late August or early September. The new concept will feature coffee beans from North Park’s Torque Coffee and Rancho Bernardo’s Compa Coffee Roasters. It will have 25-30 seats (all indoor), with extended seating available into the adjacent Cloak & Petal dining room. All seating is indoors, however, with front windows opening outward, the space will create the feeling of a recessed patio with an open-air atmosphere. A small food menu from Cloak & Petal Executive Chef Robert Cassidy will also be available, offering a mix of elevated café dishes and Japanese-inspired comfort food like Breakfast Bao (spam, chashu pork belly, or katsu chicken), Breakfast Eggroll, Edamame Hummus Toast, and Tamago Sando. Downtown’s ASA Bakery & Cafe will provide baked goods as well. Next spring, a brunch menu from Cassidy is expected to be added.
