Bay to Breakers, the historic and iconic annual event in San Francisco, has joined forces with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce for 2024.
The association, which includes starting a Corporate Teams program, is aimed at helping boost the downtown area and the city as a whole, which is still suffering the effects of the COVID pandemic.
“In 1912, the first Bay to Breakers race was run in San Francisco as a way to show that San Francisco had recovered from the devastating 1906 Earthquake and Fire,” said Rodney Fong, President & CEO of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce . “In 2024, this most iconic of City experiences is once again hitting the ground running to celebrate San Francisco’s rebound from COVID and its aftermath. We’re delighted they have joined the Chamber and look forward to helping them with their Corporate Teams program.”
Bay to Breakers San Fransisco is a 7.5-mile foot race the third Sunday in May – the 2024 Bay to Breakers date is May 19 – that goes from the bay to where the breakers crash into Ocean Beach at the end of Golden Gate Park. But it’s much more than that; it’s a free-wheeling moving party that has people in costumes (for decades, dedicated people build floats and pushed shopping carts filled with adult libations), impromtu block parties and musicians and bands, some of which just stop and sing or play along the route.
It is San Francisco’s version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans or the Street Parade in Zurich.
“As anyone who has participated or watched or experienced Bay to Breakers knows, this is much more than a race,” said Kyle Meyers, CEO of Silverback, the local company that also produces the SF Marathon and SailGP. “Bay to Breakers is about celebrating all the good things San Francisco. And, frankly, the past year has seen a lot of attention from outside media talking up our challenges. We’ve decided to make sure people see all sides of the picture.”
