National Rum Day – yes, there is one – is Tuesday Aug. 16. And while we are providing recipes of special rum drinks to be enjoyed that day in this post, you really need a bartender who knows what she or he is doing to make it for you rather than trying to mix it up at home.

So here are National Rum Day drinks and where to drink them in Los Angeles, all using Don Papa rum, a small-batch rum from the Philippines. You may not be aware of this but the Philippines is the original producer of sugar cane and has been making rums for more than 150 years. Don Papa rum is unique because it is aged seven years in in American oak bourbon barrels. The pairing of the volcanic soil of the Philippines with the oak bourbon barrels provide a rich, very smooth taste that is perfectly matched to these cocktails.

Papa Don’t Preach Rum Drink – Available at Saso

Saso is celebrating national rum day with rum cocktails all day. The Papa Don’t Preach ($16) name is a take on the Madonna song of the same title and Saso is providing a complimentary appetizer when you order the drink.

• 1 oz Don Papa Rum
• 1 oz Passion Fruit Juice
• .75 oz Amaro Montenegro
• .50 oz Lemon Juice

How To Make It: Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice and garnish with edible wild greens

Papa Loves Mambo Rum Drink – Available at Far Bar Little Tokyo

Far Bar is serving up its Papa Loves Mambo cocktail ($15) all day long. Receive a complimentary appetizer when you order a Don Papa cocktail at this Little Tokyo bar.

• 1.5 oz Don Papa Rum
• 1 oz Lime Juice
• .75 oz Chinola Liquer
• .25 oz Simple Syrup

How To Make It: Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake hard. Strain into chilled coupe and garnish with edible flower

Pistachio Mai Tai – Available at Tropicana Pool Bar & Cafe

Here’s a traditional rum drink with an interesting twist at a legendary Los Angeles bar, the Pistachio Mai Tai at The Hollywood Roosevelt. Even better, the Tropical Pool Bar & Cafe is a poolside bar.  The Pistachio Mai Tai ($17) will be available all day in honor of the holiday. This creative rum drink is made with Don Papa Rum, Lime, Pistachio Syrup, Cointreau and pineapple.
