Island-Hopping Around The Bars Of The British Virgin Islands

Rum, warm weather and boats.
And women!
This is what was promised to me when by buddy “Ice” suggested that I go to the Moorings Interline Regatta, a 10-day party flotilla in the British Virgin Islands.
That was akin to throwing chum in the water for a Great White shark. Inviting a grizzly bear to a honey festival, Tommy Lee to a tattoo convention.
In other words, done deal.
Ice told me to pack a toga, a pirate’s costume, a Gilligan’s Island outfit and a few other theme things, for each night of the regatta there’s a costume party at the various bars on the different islands.
And what a party!
I got a pretty good indication of this the first night, which was an unofficial party. It was more a gathering of a couple hundred of us not in the actually regatta. Instead, we were part of the “party cats,” the catamaran sailboats that island-hop from theme party to theme party.
The party this night moved from the island to the boats and the next thing I knew, clothes (bathing suits, really) were coming off and people were jumping into the water. I’ll let your imagination take if from here.
At the end of the night Luau Larry, who is not known for having good directions after he’s been drinking a bit, wound up on the wrong boat. Completely naked.
The rest of the trip was a well, trip. My favorite part was pulling into the different harbors each afternoon. People would jump off their boats and into the dingys with super-soakers and zip around the boats, firing steams of water at people standing on decks and riding around in other dingys.
I will say, there was indeed a lot of rum. Luau Larry, our on-board mixologist, made sure of that, of course.
However, I did find, as Jimmy Buffett sang in “Mananana” when talking about Cayne Garden Bay in the BVIs, that “women and water were in short supply.”
Most of the available girls were snatched up the first couple of days. I did meet the best-looking one of the bunch, Camille from Norway, but her crew must have kept her in the brig the entire time because she only made it out to one theme party.
But overall, I had such a good time, I went again the next year.
And I’ll be going again another year.
Cheers!
