4th Of July Weekend Music Festivals
• Summerfest, Milwaukee
Dates: June 23-July 2; July 7-9
About: The World’s Largest Music Festival – or, as locals call it the “Big Gig”– is a two-week festival of bands, beers, foods and fun. It is held at a waterfront park in downtown Milwaukee. Bands of all kinds of musical tastes, from classic rock to country to hip-hop, fill stages throughout the area. Admission includes all but the biggest stage where a ticket is required. It is THE thing to do in Milwaukee and the surrounding area each summer. Note that it is always dark on July 3 and 4.

• Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic, Austin
Date: July 4
About: Austin’s traditional way to spend the 4th is at a Texas-sized picnic. Naturally, with music. This one involves Nelson and his Family band, as well as several other bands. Held at the Q2 Stadium, it started back in 1973 by Willie himself.

• Waterfront Blues Fest, Portland, Oregon
Dates: July 1-4
About: Four stages at McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. On the 4th, there will be fireworks over the Wilamette River, set to a soundtrack of classic blues, soul and funk.

• ESSENCE Festival, New Orleans
Dates: June 30-July 3
About: The ESSENCE Festival of Culture is the largest festival in the country, drawing in more than 530,000 attendees annually over the July 4th weekend. The festival mobilizes, informs, and uplifts the largest global gathering of everyday multigenerational Black women in a safe space to achieve new levels of sisterhood, personal development, wealth creation, civic engagement & community leadership. This year’s ESSENCE Festival features Janet Jackson as one of the peformers.

• Navy Pier Fourth Of July
Dates: July 2-4
About: A traditional way Chicagoans celebrate the 4th of July is to Navy Pier, which has a full weekend of concerts, food & drink and, on the 4th, a huge fireworks show. This is all free to attend.
